雪花 Snowflake

Date: December 15, 2013 Author: Jing Wang Categories: Bilingual Activities

雪  花 xuě huā — snowflake (Lit: snow flower)

I have been making paper cutting snowflakes to decorate our house.  To show my son (6 and half) how to make paper cutting snowflakes and learn Chinese, I have put together this Snowflake poem and paper cutting patterns. We read out the poem then do the paper cutting. I thought you may want to download it and play with your child/ren in the festival period

If you are not Chinese and don’t know how to read it, you can find a short video with my reading here.  Please note it is not the first one ‘Count the number of fingers’, but the second poem ‘Make a Guess’ in the short video.

This PDF contains one pattern. It is a simple version for kids compare to the snowflakes in the photo below. The poem I used is great for kids learning numbers too as it has got beautiful rhythm.

The poem is from one of the teaching resources by Overseas Chinese Language and Culture Education. You might want to find out more if you are a Chinese teacher. Here is the link.

Have fun!
