How Chinese characters were formed 6? Compound indicatives from 火

Date: June 6, 2013 Author: Jing Wang Categories: Chinese characters

We know this is 火 fire.

Two fires combined together, one atop the other, represents the idea of “a roaring fire.” This is the original meaning of 炎. Then it was extended to mean “burn”; from “burn” it was also extended to mean “burning hot”, blazing!

This is 炎. We read in pinyin: yán

Three fires together,  it means burning out then represents “flame of fire“.
